Candles have long been a household staple in many homes, whether you’re into super sweet scents or fresh and fruity wax’s, you’ll know that lighting a candle at the end of the day really helps to set the tone of your room. If you’re left with empty candle jars and not sure what to do with them, then just follow our guide to 5 ways you can reuse your candle jars…
Cleaning your candle jar
If you’re wanting to reuse your candle jar then it’s best you give your empty pot a good clean! To clean and empty your jar, begin with scooping out as much wax as possible from the jar, then followed by a good soak in soapy warm water. Once you’ve done that your jar should be clean and you’re good to go!
1. Pencil Pot
If you’re like us then you probably have a whole lot of stationary and not enough storage! Worry no more, just grab your taller candle jar and use it as a funky pencil pot. You can even begin decorating your jar to add a little extra umph to your desk. Make sure you use the correct paint that works well on glass. If you’re looking for inspiration for candle pot designs, try adding some multicoloured polka dots or a bold cow print and your desk is sure to make heads turn at the office!
2. Makeup brush holder
Makeup brushes do wonders for our cosmetic routines but they’re also a nuisance to find suitable storage for, after all there’s so many different shapes and sizes, where do we begin? If you’re not in the mood for embellishing your jar then it’s best to purchase a beautifully decorated candle, use the wax then clean the jar and pop your makeup brushes in. We’re loving this Shearer Lemon Zest Candle right now, it’s bright yellow in colour and smells amazing too, what more could you want?
3. Plant Pots
Whilst you may love having extravagant planters in your living room, you’ll know that they come with a hefty price tag too! That’s why reusing your candle jar isn’t just beneficial for the environment, it’s cost-friendly also. We recommend using a large three wick candle, this ensures that the plant isn’t too big for the jar. If you’re feeling creative then add some moss and gravel to your jar, followed by a cute succulent – we promise you’re going to adore it!
4. Tealight holder
Whilst you may have lost your favourite candle, you can replace it with a tealight instead. Tealights are cheap and easy to get hold of. Whether it’s a warm vanilla tealight or a berry fusion one, you can easily pop one into your jar and leave your room smelling and looking great!
5. Make your own candle
Finally the last one on our list is making your own candle. You’re probably wondering where do I even begin? First you need to start off with a wick, just trim the wick to be a few inches taller than your jar. Then use a hot glue gun to stick the metal disk on the wick to the bottom of the jar. Next you need to grab some wax and melt it, follow this with the fun part – adding colour and scent. Finally pour the wax into your jar, sit back and wait!
If you’ve been feeling a little hot, fiery or overly stressed-out recently – you’re not alone! Pitta season (a.k.a. summer) is dawning, and whilst we predominantly focus upon the bodily and psychological workings of the doshas, it is also vital to observe how the doshas find themselves reflected in our environment, atmosphere and overall lifestyle.
So what should you expect from Pitta season (this is Ayurvedic terminology for summer, remember) and how might this mean a change in skincare regime?
Keeping the body and mind in balance is crucial to any Ayurvedic practice, which is why during the warmer months of Pitta season it is important to keep a cool mind and soothe those summer feels…
Slow down – try turning your ‘routine’ into a ‘ritual’ by compassionately massaging the Urban Veda Soothing Body Oil into your skin. The ingredients, including Sandalwood and Lavender, promise to bring harmony to the mind and reduce the stressful tension often found in aggravated muscles.
Try a cold shower (wait, don’t run away yet!), take time every morning to practice the ancient Ayurvedic ritual of cold showers – otherwise known as an ‘Ishnan’. This will not only increase energy and blood circulation but also radically cool a cortisol-pumped body. Try using the Urban Veda Purifying Body Wash and Scrub for an extra detoxifying hose down.
Surround yourself with subtle smells, and inhale calming aromas such as those found within the Urban Veda Soothing Hydrating Toner. Gingerly squirt a few drops onto your palms before gliding over the face in sweeping motions. Finish by lightly tapping the energetic points found on the temples, under the eyes, along the upper brow line and down by the chin.
Take the heat off those pores and combat symptoms of overexposure to the sun with the Urban Veda Soothing Day Cream. Apply after your daily SPF (or even mix the two together!) and you’ll be left with nourished, protected skin that doesn’t feel inflamed or irritated by the heat.
We hope you have a wonderful start to your pitta season! To shop the full range of Urban Veda products click here.

Don’t let the word “facial” fool you. Facials can be applied to almost any part of the body including your hands! Whilst you’re familiar with the smoothing, soothing benefits of a facial, you’re probably not aware of the amazing benefits a hand facial can provide, and following a year of reapplying anti-bac, it’s time you got to know all about it…
What Is a Hand Facial?
Hand facials are extremely similar to the facials you get done to your face. The treatments generally begin with a light massage and a cleanse to make sure any bacteria and oil has been eliminated from the skin. After that it typically involves using an exfoliating product on the skin, eliminating a lot of the dead skin cells and creating a fresh base. Finally the hand facial ends with a hydrating hand cream to give your hands the moisture boost it needs.
Step 1: Cleanse Away
Kick things off with a gentle cleanse. Most sanitisers and hand soaps are fresh but harsh on the skin, the ingredients are often synthetic and contain chemicals that aren’t kind to your hands. The alcohol they contain is perfect for killing bacteria but it also can be extremely drying and strip your skin of its moisture. So a gentle, clean formula with nourishing ingredients is best. Try out the Nesti Dante Paradiso Tropicale Coconut and Frangipani Soap, infused with a floral fruity scent and smoothing ingredients, it’s perfect for your hand cleanse!
Step 2: Exfoliate
Who doesn’t love a good facial exfoliation? We know we do! Exfoliating your hands is extremely satisfying too. A delicate exfoliation can polish away dead skin cells, revealing smoother, softer hands and who wouldn’t want that. Start off with your choice of exfoliation product, here at FD we’re loving the DECLEOR 1000 Grains Body Exfoliator Super Size. This indulgent scrub helps provide your skin with a velvety-smooth finish. Enriched with grapefruit essential oil and pearl sugar, it gives it a fresh, invigorating fragrance. Exfoliate away!
Step 3: Hydrate & Moisturise
Our favourite part of a hand facial – the moisturising step! As a rule people tend to forget about their hands and don’t moisturise as much as they should do. If your hands are feeling neglected in the hydration department then make sure to follow this step carefully. Apply a thick layer of a soft hand cream. We recommended the Australian Bodycare Hand Cream, this vegan cream features natural ingredients and has been dermatologically tested too. If you’re feeling brave then pop an old pair of clean socks on top of your hands to lock all of the moisture in, leaving your hands to soak up all the nutrients!
Your lipstick can significantly impact your look, which means it can play a role in your mood whenever you wear it. Many women love a bold red lip, which can be a true confidence booster and perfect for special occasions. Some prefer pinks or neutrals to enhance natural lips; there’s one thing we know for sure – there are plenty of choices out there to suit every wearer.
What is a perfect lipstick shade?
Is choosing your ideal lipstick all about the colours you prefer? Kind of, but there’s a little more to it, like picking the shades that work with your specific skin and hair colour.
Does that mean that some colours won’t suit you? No! Choosing lipsticks to compliment your complexion means looking out for the right shades, not colours. There’s a red, pink, brown, and every other colour out there to suit us all. But the actual shade that works for you might not be the best choice for someone else.
Do lipsticks look different on everyone?
Yep! For example, suppose three friends with fair, medium, and dark complexions share lipstick. In that case, the product will look a lot different on each face. Depending on the shade and skin tone of the wearer, specific lipsticks might look beautiful or could equally appear misplaced.
That’s why it’s essential to try and choose the shades that work with your skin tone. A blue-based red might make one person look and feel beautiful, while the same shade could miss the mark on someone else. These people are more likely to suit orangey-red shades, while those who wear blue-bases might not pull these off.
It doesn’t mean one skin tone is better than another, just that certain lipstick shades might not suit everyone.
What are skin tones and undertones?
No matter your race or ethnicity, you’ll fall into the light, medium, or deep category when it comes to your complexion. And there’s more… As well as your noticeable skin colour, you have an undertone that’s either cool, warm, or neutral.
When you match your lipstick to your skin’s undertone, you can get the most out of your complexion and make your entire face shine. But how do you figure out which undertone you have?
Working out your skin’s undertone
Look at the veins in your wrists. If they look blue through your skin, you probably have a cool undertone. You can get the most out of this by choosing lipsticks with subtle blue or purple tones, like berry shades and pale nudes.
If your veins look blue-green or you have a golden or olive hue to your skin, you most likely have a warm undertone. Warm colours like letterbox red, coral, or peachy nudes will work beautifully with your complexion.
Greenish veins? You probably have a neutral undertone. Good news! Most shades suit neutral skin tones, so you can try out a bunch and figure out which specific colours you prefer, rather than worrying about what to avoid.
Lipstick shades for light skin
The fair-skinned among us know how hard finding a perfect lipstick shade can be. Light skin can look washed out with the wrong lipstick shade, while certain shades of pink, nude, and dusky reds can make your complexion sing.
Light skin with a cool undertone
If you have fair skin with a cool undertone, make your lipstick work for you by choosing a frosty pink or pinky-nude shade for everyday wear. If you’re looking for a red, be sure to scope out options with blue undertones to work with your skin – think old-school Hollywood glam!
Light skin with a warm undertone
If you have light skin and warm undertones, a dusky neutral lipstick will work beautifully with your complexion. Pink-nudes will also look gorgeous on you, while pink-toned reds can be ideal when you’re after something bold.
Light skin with a neutral undertone
If you think your light skin has neutral undertones, you can probably pull off any shade you fancy. Still, your daily choices might be pale pinks or pink nudes, while brown nudes might look a little dark against your fair skin. Red will be a bold look, contrasting your pale white complexion; you might save it for special occasions or rock it daily – whatever makes you feel your best!
Lipstick shades for medium skin
If you have a medium skin tone, you’re more likely to have yellow and olive undertones. That means many lipsticks labelled nude might look unnaturally pink against your complexion.
Medium skin with a cool undertone
If you have cool undertones, blue-red lipsticks will work beautifully against your complexion. These bold shades will look a little less striking against your medium skin than they might on your fair friends, so you could wear them every day without feeling too made up. Cool, bright pinks can also be perfect for you. Again, the darker your skin, the easier it is to wear bold lipstick without feeling like a big deal.
Medium skin with a warm undertone
You might like to choose lipsticks with a glossy finish, which can bring out the gorgeous glow in warm undertones. Warm, orangey reds will be beautiful too, and peachy nudes or coral shades can look stunning.
Medium skin with a neutral undertone
Again, neutral undertones can carry off lots of lipstick colours and shades. Brown can be beautiful and versatile, while dusky pink options will be easy to wear every day.
Lipstick shades for dark skin
Dark complexions can pull off many lipsticks beautifully. Even the most shocking shades of red, orange, or purple will look laid back against dark and very dark skin tones. Still, undertones apply, and you can make the most of your natural colouring by choosing lipsticks that suit.
Dark skin with a cool undertone
Blue-based lipsticks will still suit you the most, so look out for reds and cool pinks that fit the bill. Actual blue shades, like purple or violet, will also look perfect on you; not many people can get away with these hues, so enjoy them!
Dark skin with a warm undertone
Coral pink could be your go-to if you have dark skin with warm undertones. These shades will suit you down to the ground. You could also try warm browns, caramel shades, or indulgent reds.
Dark skin with a neutral undertone
Your neutral undertones mean you can wear most shades, and your dark skin means you can wear most colours, so go crazy! Try various lipsticks until you find the options that you love. Like with all darker complexions, reds, corals, and dusky pinks will look beautiful.
Choosing the best lipstick colours for your hair
Curveball! More than just choosing a lipstick shade to suit your skin, you might want to think about how your product works with your hair colour. Your makeup can help you get more out of your hair colour, creating a beautiful look that you can fall back on time and time again.
Lipstick for blonde hair
If you have blonde hair, glossy pink, peach, and berry tones will look beautifully feminine and complement your locks. A statement-making red lip can be gorgeous against blonde hair, too, while browns can work if you choose a suitable shade for your skin tone.
Lipstick for red hair
Redheads can look stunning with bold red and pink lips, but depending on the shade of your hair, these bold hues might also clash with your complexion. It’s all about finding your unique complementary colours, which will probably include lots of nudes or sheer glosses. Your hair makes a statement on its own, so you might not need bold lipstick to add anything to your look.
Lipstick for brunette hair
Brunette hair is versatile enough to look good with lots of lipstick colours, so you might want to focus on what’s best for your skin tone. Still, burgundy and letterbox red should look beautiful alongside your hair – just choose a shade that suits your complexion, whether it’s blue-based or warm.
Lipstick for black hair
Black hair with red lips is one of the most striking looks out there. Choose a shade that suits your skin tone, and enjoy your special occasion go-to. Depending on your skin colour, you might try a variety of pinks and browns too. Black hair can mean very fair or dark skin, so consider your complexion as a whole when choosing the lipstick for you.
