Do you dream of pout perfection? If you’d love to track down the best shade of red lipstick for your complexion, you’re in luck! Choose the right shade of red in a texture to suit you and kiss goodbye to dull, lifeless lips forever.
The first thing that you need to understand before choosing your perfect red is which undertone you are. If you’ve never heard of it before, don’t panic! Just imagine your skin has two layers – the top layer, and the layer underneath. The colour of this under-layer is your undertone.
What are the different colour skin undertones? • Cool undertone (pink) • Neutral undertone • Warm undertone (yellow)
How to work out your skin’s undertone
1. The jewellery test – if silver jewellery suits you best, you’re likely to have a ‘cool’ undertone, and if you look better in gold, you probably have a ‘warm’ undertone. If both silver and gold jewellery looks great on you, you’re ‘neutral’. 2. The veins test – look at your wrist: if your veins look blue, you have a ‘cool’ undertone, and if they appear green, you’re ‘warm’. If you can’t tell what colour they are, you’re ‘neutral’. 3. The tan test – struggle to catch a tan? You have a ‘cool’ undertone. If you catch a tan easily and don’t tend to burn, you’re ‘warm’. If you can go either way, you probably have a ‘neutral’ undertone.
The best red lipstick based on your skin’s undertone
Cool undertones If you think you have a cool undertone, look for a blue-red lipstick to complement your complexion. Wearing blue-red lipstick is also a great trick to making your teeth look whiter!
Warm undertones Warm undertones should go for orange-red lipsticks, as the warmth of the orange will flatter your complexion perfectly.
Neutral undertones The lucky ones! While there is no specific shade of lipstick for you based on your undertone, you should find that you can pull off almost any colour. If you want to choose a lipstick based on your skin-tone, rather than your undertone, read on.
The best red lipstick based on your skin tone
The best red lipstick for light skin tones
If you have fair skin, you might be worried about reaching for the red – well, try it! Instead of harshly contrasting your complexion, red lipstick in the right shade can perfectly complement your skin and leave you feeling amazing.
Fair skin looks fab with wine-coloured lipstick. We’ve got a lot of lip-love for Lily Collins, and she’s working the merlot-shade beautifully here.
If you have ‘cool’ undertones and fair skin, choose a bright red-blue lipstick for a timeless look. If you have ‘warm’ undertones beneath your pale complexion, cherry reds are best for you as they pick up the pigments in your skin, making you look fresh and youthful.
Red lipstick for medium skin tones
Vibrant reds are a great choice for medium skin tones, which have the warmth to carry them off. Choose a lipstick with orange undertones to enhance any hint tan you might have.
Red lipstick for medium-dark skin tones
One word – coral!
This fresh red shade looks fantastic with the warm undertones of an olive complexion, and since coral is slightly pinker than most red shades, it makes a great option for casual days.
Red lipstick for dark skin tones
If you have a dark skin tone you can work an orange-based red like no one else! Lupita Nyong’o is an excellent example of how stunning this look can be.
Lucky for you, deep skin tones can carry off most shades of red, whether it’s a bright candy colour or a captivating maroon.
Red lipstick to suit everyone
If you don’t feel confident enough to choose a red lipstick based on your undertone or skin tone, you can still wear the look with confidence. A classic red – that’s pure, unadulterated red with no orange or blue tone – looks great on everyone. Take inspiration from Anne Hathaway on this one, she knows how to do it right.
Choosing a red lipstick texture
New to the game? If red lipstick is out of your comfort zone, go for a lip stain that you can apply and pretty much forget about. Lip stains are one of our favourite products because they can double-up as blushers – who doesn’t love a two-in-one?
Want to work a high-powered pout? Matte lipsticks give a highly-pigmented finish that’s perfect for a sophisticated, high-fashion look.
Lip gloss is the way to go if you can’t handle the commitment of an intensely pigmented lip! Red glosses can still pack a colourful punch when layered up but stay feeling light on your lips.
If you want to wear it and forget about it, go for a lightly-pigmented gloss (rather than a deeply-coloured one) and just apply a quick slick. It will wear off gradually but won’t leave a harsh line where it’s faded.
Sheer lipsticks deliver a wash of colour in a light, non-sticky texture – it’s like using a fancy lip balm!
Red lipstick expert tips
1. Use lip liner – lip liner helps to prolong the wear of your lipstick and stops it from bleeding out to the skin around your lips. Match your liner to your lipstick if possible, or go for a shade closer to your natural lip colour for a less dramatic edge.
2. Colour, blot, colour – apply your lip colour, blot it with a tissue, then pull a tissue apart so that it’s just one thin layer; place this tissue over your lips and use a powder brush to dust on translucent powder. Then, remove the tissue, apply another coat of lipstick and enjoy long-lasting results!

There’s no denying the appeal of a sun-kissed glow. No matter what your natural skin tone, even just the hint of a tan can help to make you look healthier and feel more confident, and that’s why so many of us reach for the fake tan as part of our regular routine.
While some of us prefer a deep golden tan to a subtle hint of summer, we’re all in agreement when it comes to faking it – a natural look is best. Throughout the colder months, achieving that fresh-off-the-beach glow sometimes seem impossible, and when your tan needs topping up every few days, maintaining it can be even harder.
If you’re stuck in a never-ending cycle of application, patchiness, and reapplication, consider the type of fake tan you use. If you’ve been applying the same extra-dark lotion since your college days, it might be time to think about the formula you’re using and how well it suits you.
Here, you can find all you need to know about fake tanning mousses, sprays and lotions – prepare to get your glow on!
Fake tan mousses don’t contain much moisture in their formula, so if you have oily skin, this could be the way to go. Aside from their lack of moisture, mousses tend to have a soft, silky feel, so they glide onto the skin and feel lovely.
If you’re a fake tan first timer, we recommend choosing a light mousse and applying with a mitt. Tanning mousses have an aerated formula, which means they leave a more even finish than thicker lotions – if you miss a spot, the line of colour difference won’t be quite so harsh.
Our favourite fake tan mousse is St. Tropez Gradual Tan, which has a lightweight formula and builds colour gradually, making it suitable for all skin tones. St. Tropez are tanning experts, and this hydrating mousse dries quickly, streak-free, and fades evenly. What more could you ask for?
Fake tan sprays are having a moment. Their easy-to-apply formula and consistent even finish make them an unbeatable option for busy tanners looking for a quick, fuss-free option.
Tanning sprays work best when you have somebody else around to apply them for you – reaching your back can be tricky, especially if you’re looking for an even finish, which, of course, you are.
Tip – make sure you apply spray tan in the bathroom (in a dry shower for complete safety), and move any towels or fabrics out of the range of the spray.
If you think spray is best for you, try our favourite St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Spray. This super-fine tanning spray is so lightweight you won’t feel it going on. The St. Tropez standard formula is infused with hydrating aloe vera and intense colour, so it leaves an ultra-smooth, long-lasting tan that can’t be beaten.
Lotions are go-to for fake tanning masters thanks to their long-lasting colour. If you have the time and patience to apply your tan thoroughly – that means you’re sure you won’t miss a spot – choose a lotion for long-lasting colour and an even fade.
Lotion tanners are the best choice for dry, sensitive and mature skin because they’re often gentle, nourishing and moisturising. We adore Bondi Sands Self-Tanning Lotion for its rich colour, which is underlain with olive tones – not a drop of orange in sight!
Another fantastic option is NKD Skin’s Natural Tan Lotion, which is formulated with organic extracts to leave skin feeling nourished and can be built on to achieve the perfect colour.

Bank holiday season is here! Which means one thing… a lot of alcohol! We are all partial to a drink especially when the sun comes out, in Britain we go crazy due to it being such a rarity. That said, we all know the health implications that alcohol has. Today we are here to talk about the correlation between alcohol and bad skin.
What is alcohol skin you ask? In the short term it means the dehydration of skin, dull complexion or redness, under eye bags or breakouts and in the long-term wrinkles, prone to sun damage and skin conditions such as rosacea. So overall not your skins best friend. But summer is here, we need solutions so we can enjoy our best life in our best skin!
Obviously, the obvious answer is to curb your drinking or not to binge when you go out, spreading the units out across the week is better than over doing it on a Saturday night. But today we are looking at how to give your skin as much nutrients as possible so when that weekend of fun creeps up it won’t have a detrimental effect on your appearance.
Tips and Tricks;
Hydration is key! Alcohol reduces the production of a hormone called vasopressin, this hormone tells your kidney to reabsorb water so when you consume alcohol your body is not getting this message and is flushing all water out. This leaves your skin rough, with uneven tones and even scaly patches. So, the obvious answer is making sure you’re drinking enough water, but another option would be to get a facial oil. Oil can penetrate deeper into the skin in comparison to moisturizer so this will give you better chance of keeping your skin super soft and hydrated. A brand we love and trust for facial oils is Urban Veda, the purifying facial oil contains rich moringa, healing gotu kola and antibacterial organic neem oil which targets oily skin which are prone to breakouts.
If you are going to let your skin suffer through alcohol intake, then counteract it with some high in nutrients foods. 2 pints is the equivalent to a burger so make sure your diet includes rich foods such as fruit, vegetables, oily fish and nuts. These are great players in achieving radiant skin or alternatively smart beauty products which include vitamin C will help.
Choose your liquor wisely; clearer the better! Drinking Vodka, Gin and tequila will mean it gets out your system quicker than alternative ale’s. Be smart with your mixers because you don’t want to overload on sugar as we know that causes breakouts. To help prevention after a heavy night drinking, do not skip make up removal or opt for a make up wipe. Cleansing, toning and moisturising your skin will keep it clean decreasing the risk of breakouts the next morning and it will make you feel so much better when you wake up with a heavy head.
Try the Phyto Replenish Oil by Dermalogica, it absorbs in to your skin reinforcing its protective barrier. This is an essential lipid blend that included orchid flower and chia seed oil soothes visible lines and locks in critical moisture.
Avalon Organics Vitamin C Rejuvenating Moisturiser – Formulated with a powerful antioxidant team of Vitamin C and E, this oil free moisturizer will help control any outbreaks and is perfect for sun- aging repair protection. It’s formulated with organic aloe and hyaluronic acid for soothing hydration which has benefits of daily repair, firmer and more radiant skin and energises complexion and circulation.
Our last recommendation would be the Elemis Soothing Chamomile cleanser is a hypoallergenic cooling, cleansing milk that removes impurities and make up. Active extracts of Lime Blossom, Lecithin and Vitamin E help to balance excess surface oils and soothe skin which leaves you with a fresh and radiant complexion.
After months of snow, slush, and freezing cold temperatures, spring is finally on the horizon.
It’s quite an exciting prospect – packing away the Winter woolies…. gone are the sheepskin boots, fur-lined hoods, and loading up your skin with thick creams and serums to help fight off the wicked winter weather. With the season slowly turning, skin needs to recover from the ravages of the awful cold and drying temperatures, so it’s a temporary goodbye to the heavy formulations, the nourishing “comfort blankets” of winter and hello to the lighter, fresher more luminous complexion …which I’m sure is lurking somewhere under all that dull skin that has built up over winter!
So, first things first…. to achieving beautiful, hydrated and radiant skin is to remove all of the dead skin that has built up in the last few months of cold weather. Enter, Exfoliators! And at Gatineau we are the masters of exfoliation… let’s face it, you don’t win a Gold Industry awards for having the BEST FACIAL Exfoliator for nothing!
Pro Radiance Anti-Ageing Gommage… is the ultimate Gatineau “go to” or “desert island product” to achieve an instant skin transformation. It’s always important to exfoliate but there’s no time more necessary to slough away the dull, parched skin than after the winter. Quite simply, if you’re not exfoliating, your skin just isn’t as healthy as it could be!
As we age, the process of cell regeneration slows down. This means that the body is slower to shed skin cells and generate new ones. When the old skin cells start to pile up on the surface of the skin, it can leave skin looking dull, rough, and dry. Furthermore, the build-up of dead skin cells can result in excess oil and clogged pores, leading to blemishes and acne. When your skins blocked it can’t breathe, it can’t absorb nutrients and it certainly struggles to stay hydrated as the water can’t filter down into the skin cells. There’s no way of looking fresh faced, and getting ”Spring Clean” if you don’t start with exfoliation!
Once you have lifted the lid off your skin (so to speak) you can get serious with a deep clean…. Think about it as a “Reboot” for your skin. A way of removing the toxins and debris of winter and flooding the skin with micro nutrients to transform and boost its energy levels. The skin needs a little TLC after a season of overindulging and using heavier products – plus we know that air particle pollution is at an all-time high.
The Melatogenine AOX Probiotic Beauty Serum is a hugely impressive product. A little bottle of skin perfection, and a sure-fire way to bring your skin back to optimum wellness. This anti-ageing super serum is powered by Gatineau’s own youth activating molecule Melatogenine™ and works to significantly reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles whilst improving radiance and luminosity. It is packed full of ingredients such as Marine Elastin to restore much needed elasticity to the skin and Marine Collagen to plump the skin from within and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Sorghum Juice Extract works to provide an immediate tightening effect which instantly lifts the skin. As we transition our skin from winter to spring, a serum like this will help to repair and refresh the appearance of the skin, boosting circulation and defending the skin against free radical and pollution damage, essential to our skin’s overall health and wellness.
The next step in the glow game is swapping your winter moisturizer for something a little lighter. Luminosity is key!
As we age our skin finds it harder to retain moisture in the uppermost layers and therefore the fresh, “just out of the shower” look is no longer as easy to achieve. Pick up any magazine, check out every red-carpet event and somehow, everyone has that “Lit from within” radiance.
Mixed together they make the most glorious Illuminating skin Perfecter. This combination is Gatineau’s secret to subtly radiant skin. Both products have strong skin protection properties and help build resilience and strength in the skin’s protective barrier. Toxin-free skin equates to youthful and healthy skin! The products of course can be used separately but when mixed they create something special… a perfect partnership!
The result? A gorgeous luminous primer that gives an instant “Soft-Focus” effect to the skin. The light / medium coverage from our SPF 30 CC cream disguises and evens- out a maybe not so perfect skin, giving a very natural make up finish. Blend this with the Perfecting Drops that deliver their ultra-fine light diffusing particles, creating a pearlescent veil over the skin to instantly illuminate. The blurring microspheres smooth over wrinkles and any imperfections to create an optical illusion of a flawless and pore less complexion.
Skin immediately looks plumped, radiant and youthful, lines are blurred, and it immediately brightens a dull complexion. Who doesn’t want that?
