The ponytail with some scrunchie action…
It’s true, that old-school favourite is back in town. Scrunchies may hail from the 80s, but they’ve beaten Bananarama and shoulder pads to make it back onto the catwalks in a blaze of glory for 2014. From colourful ones to neutral versions that could almost be called subtle, scrunchies have graced the locks of models at Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Cara Delevingne herself has been spotted sporting one. Need we say more?
Why? This do is easy but makes a statement, plus you can opt for a really jazzy scrunchie for extra festive fun!
How? Because it needs neat roots, this look works best on day-old hair, so you might want to reach for the dry shampoo to give your locks more body, we love the Osmo Day Two Styler Dry Shampoo, £2.99. Simply brush your hair into a ponytail – slicked back is on trend but choose how it suits you best. To really channel 80s chic, it’s the higher the better. Use a thin elastic band to secure your do before wrapping your scrunchie around just twice – after all, you want maximum material on show!
Up-do with added sparkle…
Christmas is pretty much the ideal occasion for glitz and glamour, handed to you on a plate! Take full advantage by perfecting an up-do featuring a sparkling headband. We love Leighton Meester’s pretty style and Diane Kruger’s tousled, undone look. Of course, there’s only one queen of the headband this winter, and that’s The Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot Robbie with her crown of pearls and jewels!
Why? Whether you add sparkle to that Christmas Eve party or work it for Christmas Day extravagance, do this and you’ll dazzle them, darling!
How? Wash your hair and scrunch mousse through the ends to create maximum volume – try L’Oreal Tecni Art Volume + Extra Mousse, £8.99, then blow-dry upside down for freshness and lift at the roots. Either gather your hair in a low side bun (Çÿ la Diane) or twist into a sophisticated chignon at the back of your head. The beauty of having a gorgeous headband is that you can be as messy as you like when it comes to creating your up-do, just as long as you position your headband properly to create a neater section at the front. Place your headband to balance out your features – not too far back.
Channel your inner sixties babe…
Everyone from Millie Mackintosh to Kylie Jenner has been doing their best to rock Brigitte Bardot-style big hair recently, and with sixties fashion still well and truly in, we think big, bouncy locks full of body are the only way to go if you want to feel 100% glamorous this Christmas. You’re guaranteed to turn heads, but you might to tap into your need pro skills – and the right products – to get the look.
Why? Really, big hair is the only hair that’ll do that hot new dress justice.
How? Prep hair by washing with a volumising shampoo and conditioner then let it dry naturally until it’s almost completely dry. Next, distribute volumising mousse through the lengths of your hair before rolling it round large rollers (for the perfect lift go for the Diva Stay Hot Rollers, £38.99) and leave it to dry completely before removing. Make sure you get as much lift at the roots as possible by taking the rollers right up to rest at your scalp. When your hair is dry, unravel the rollers and shake your hair out. Backcomb your hair at the roots for extra lift – or cheat using Tigi Bed Head Sugar Dust, £6.99. Next use Montibello HDS LUX Soft Shine Effect Finishing Cream, £4.99 from the mid-lengths down. Finally grab some strong-hold hairspray – try ID Hair Elements Gold Fixit Inplace Strong Hairspray, £8.99 and spritz well to keep your curls in place – TA DAH!
How do you like to style your hair over the festive season?
With Halloween now been and gone, it’s time for one of my favourite seasons of the year, Christmas! I cannot wait to get stuck into the Christmas shopping before the pandemonium of the last minute shopping begins and I of course Fragrance Direct have got some right goodies this year.
As everyone will remember as a child the excitement of opening up all the little ‘extra’ presents that you would get in your Christmas stocking, I thought I’d share a few of my stocking filler picks for this Christmas.
W7 ‘In The Buff’ Palette | £4.99
Every Christmas I’ve always got my eye on some sort of makeup palette, usually consisting of neutral based shades. This one from W7 is an absolute steal as it contains twelve neutral eye shadows that can be worn quite simple in the day, but also built up into a smoky eye look at night. The eye shadows themselves are amazing in quality and for £4.99 it is a bargain. I’d be very happy if I found this in my stocking on Christmas morning.
The Body Shop Shea Body Butter | £2.99
When it comes to stocking fillers you cannot go wrong with a body butter from The Body Shop, as pretty much any girl will love these. They have an amazing array of scents/flavours to choose from, but this shea butter scent is one of my favourites. It’s not too overpowering of a scent and it leaves the skin so soft and nourished.
Essie Professional Routine Mini Nail Kit | £5.99
Whenever I think of Christmas I instantly think of the Essie mini sets as they bring out some really cute collections, especially the Christmas one from last year. One thing I’ve never really tried from Essie is their base coats or top coats, so this little trio is a perfect stocking filler, especially for a simple manicure set. I’ve found that base coat is really good at holding the colour and the top coat does help to prolong your nail polish, especially as I find some Essie shades really do chip quite quickly.
Real Techniques Kabuki Brush | £9.99
I think any beauty girl would be happy to see something from Real Techniques amongst their Christmas presents. I love Real Techniques, the quality is amazing and they are so affordable. This brush is probably the last blush to add to my collection and it’s a great all rounder when it comes to powder products. I also like that it folds in half as it gives two brushes in one almost, so great for travelling and even more great as a cheap last minute filler.
St Moriz Party Time Gift Set | £9.99
It wouldn’t be Christmas without a gift set and this one from St Moriz is a good one! Like most girls, I love a good fake tan and the St Moriz is one of my favourites as it is affordable, but also really good. This little set comes with the self-tanning mouse, which is my favourite from their range, a bronzing soufflǸ, which adds a lovely glow to your tan, and some cute nail wraps. All in all this gift set is ideal, and at only £9.99 it’s amazingly affordable.
So those are my Christmas stocking filler picks! Which ones will you be adding to your Christmas list?

Stoptober has been and gone, and many of us are already feeling the benefits of those 31 days without drinking or smoking , but what if you’re inspired to kick a different habit? Since many of us are in the mood to give up our sins, we thought we’d bring you the ‘whats’, ‘whys’, and ‘why not trys’ of habits to break for a healthier – and more gorgeous – you.
This may not be the most relevant for the autumn months, or so you may think’ Sun damage can and does happen throughout the gloomier months, as UV rays aren’t affected by cold temperatures and will still penetrate your skin to cause damage. Skipping the sun protection leaves your skin vulnerable to this damage, which can appear as redness, dryness, and – in the long-term – premature aging and wrinkling of the skin. Boo!
Beat it with’ SPF 15 or higher, and start straight away!
Why not try’ A sun-protection product that you can use daily, all year round. Clinique Repairwear Lift SPF 15 Firming Day Cream provides the recommended sun protection factor alongside a whole host of other complexion-beautifying benefits, including extra hydration for all skin types, firming action and wrinkle-smoothing properties. We’ve already made it a part of our daily routine for future fabulousness.
Stress has been linked to everything from memory loss to weight gain, but are you aware of the impact it can have on your appearance? Stress can worsen skin problems like psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema, and can even cause your skin to produce more oil – leading to acne and blocked pores. Since we often neglect our skin in times of stress, things can get even worse.
Beat it with’ Regular exercise, plenty of sleep and some me-time doing something you really enjoy. WebMD reminds us it’s OK to say no if you feel you’re taking too much on; set limits and boundaries to lower your stress levels.
Why not try’ A quick and easy skincare routine. When you’ve got a lot on, you need high-performance products that are quick to use. Try Skin Doctors’ Accelerating Cleanser; it cleans your skin, gently exfoliates and primes your face to absorb your next product in a flash, so follow with a good quality moisturiser. Be sure to head to your doctor’s surgery for treatment for any specific skin issues.
From dehydrated skin to spidery-thread veins, puffiness and flare-ups, alcohol can leave you looking frighteningly less than fresh-faced.
Beat it with’ A budget. One way to make sure you don’t drink too much is to only take enough money out with you for a few drinks (and enough to get home safely). You should also alternate your alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks, and have at least two alcohol-free days a week. Drink Smarter has more top tips, and we have just one thing to add: mocktails! They’re just as good at a party and are nearly always tastier than their alcoholic counterparts!
Why not try’ Rehydrating skin with a rich moisturiser like Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Skin Protectant Cream, helping to give nutrient-depleted skin a boost with The Body Shop Vitamin C Energising Face Spritz and, most importantly, cutting back on the booze and drinking plenty of water. You’ll be glowing again in no time!
