Coronavirus is keeping us all on lockdown in our homes, now
rather than dwell on the fact we can’t go out and socialise, we think it’s the
perfect time to home in on your skincare! Enforced solitude offers you the
chance to trial a different skincare routine, add new products or treatments
and give yourself a little extra pamper with all the extra time on your hands.
With that in mind, we wanted to find out how the staff at FD
are coping working from home and what their skincare routine is looking like!
Lauren – Graphic Designer
I have been adding an extra couple of steps in my routine
since working from home. Normally I do a quick cleanse in the morning and slap
on some moisturiser before my makeup and then cleanse, tone and moisturise in
the evening. But since staying at home, I’ve been using glycolic acid in the
mornings to really give my skin a boost throughout the day, sloughing off all
the dead skin cells. I’ve also not been wearing much makeup and am really
enjoying giving myself a break in that way. Once I’ve logged off my computer
for the day, I’ve been popping on a sheet mask for an extra little pamper. And
then my normal cleanse, tone and moisturise in the evenings!
So, I’ve been using a chemical exfoliant cleanser in the
morning, followed by hyaluronic acid and then an oil-free moisturiser to keep
my skin hydrated throughout the day. I haven’t been using any makeup remover
because I haven’t applied makeup up nearly two weeks! I’ve also cut down on the
amount of lip balm I usually use. I’ve also been adding in a daily face mask
and yesterday I did some at-home dermaplaning which is a treatment I usually
have done in a salon!
Now I’m working from home, I’m trying to wear less make up
and focus more on giving my skin the care and attention it needs. Usually I
only cleanse and moisturise, whereas now I’m spending more time making sure to
spritz a toner, apply a serum and an eye cream. I’ve also been making time to
do parts of my skincare routine that I usually neglect because I don’t have
enough time, such as applying a face mask.
Since working from home, I thought I’d take the opportunity
to give my skin a break from day after day makeup application for when I’m
usually in the office. I’ve recently been struggling with constant breakouts
(shoutout to my new pill) and so I’ve decided that whilst I can, I’ll be
stripping back my routine so that I am just using a light cleanser when washing
my face before applying a gel moisturiser in the evenings. Before this, I was
applying two different serums before moisturising for the daytime and evening
as well as exfoliating almost every day. I think it’s safe to say, my skin is
enjoying some fresh air!
Self-care is having a real moment right now, with everything
that is going on in the world it is vital that you look after your own mental
health, body and relationships. With everyone staying at home at the moment it
gives us so much more time to focus on ourselves and making some key
improvements in our daily lives.
Keep reading for some top tips for introducing self-care
into your routine and daily life…
Drink plenty of water
Staying hydrated is super important even
when you’re not leaving the house as much. Every function in your body requires
water and when your body is properly hydrated, it performs so much more
efficiently. When you’re at home it can be easy to lose track of how much water
you’re drinking, try using a reusable bottle to keep track of your hydration
levels and give yourself goals to hit throughout the day.
Make a menu for the week
Trying to keep some sort of routine is key
when you’re spending a lot of time at home. It’s super easy to fall into
getting up when you want, staying in PJ’s and grazing throughout the day. But
keeping a routine with your meals is much healthier for you and will keep your
body functioning as well as it can. Write out a menu for the week and try to
stick to it.
Write a to do list for the day
When you wake up in the morning, write out
a list of tasks and activities you’d like to achieve throughout the day. By
doing this you give yourself a focus and purpose for things to focus on through
the day. Try to prioritise in order of urgency so you get the most important
things done first.
Try an online yoga class/guided
If yoga and meditation is new to you, then
now is the perfect time to give it a go. There are hundreds of online yoga
classes that are super easy to follow. Introducing some mindfulness into your
routine will help keep yourself positive and motivated throughout this time and
trying a new hobby is always exciting!
Take time to decompress at the end of the
It’s super important to take time to
breathe, reflect and evaluate. Self-care doesn’t have to be super lavish or
expensive facials; it’s about taking time to yourself and giving yourself a
break. Put your phone down for 10 minutes at the end of the day and sit with
your thoughts, try to focus on the positives from the day and what you have
managed to achieve.
Move for at least 30 minutes a day
Get your body moving for at least 30
minutes per day. It is vital for keeping yourself in a good headspace, exercise
releases positive endorphins which is exactly what we need at this time! Try a
home workout, get out for a run or walk and get your heart pumping!
Sleep is another super important factor in
self-care. Sleep has been a huge topic for the last few months, and it is even
more important with us spending more time on our own. During sleep, your brain
rids itself of toxins, consolidates memories and refreshes. So, you can
literally sleep your way through self-care!
Confront any negativity
When dealing with any negative thoughts,
it’s best to confront those head on. Write down what is troubling you and
reflect back on this. Try to understand why you might be feeling this way and
what you can do to alleviate any stress or upset and then add this factor into
your daily to do list. Then every evening look back on any actions you’ve taken
and if these have helped in a positive way.
FaceTime friends and family
With social distancing and self-isolation
being so prevalent right now, it is really easy to withdraw from friends and
family who you normally see regularly. Make sure you stay in touch with the
outside world by regularly reaching out to your friends and family and
maintaining that line of contact. Organise a ‘FaceTime Wine Night’ or a ‘Family
Virtual Quiz’ night that everyone can get involved with and look forward to.
away from your laptop/work at the end of the day
With many of us now working from home when we don’t usually, it can become really easy to lose the normal structure of your workday. Try to keep to regular hours and step away from the emails once you hit 5pm! It is really important for self-care to maintain a good work/life balance, so make sure you’re still giving yourself time to relax!
Detox makes us think of extreme regimes, juices cleanses and
fasting but it doesn’t have to be that way for your skin and hair.
Living in the world right now where we’re encouraged to stay
away from our friends and families and be at home as much as possible, it’s the
perfect time to give your skin and hair a break. Constant application of
makeup, walking round in polluted atmospheres and heat application has negative
effects on our skin and hair. So, take this opportunity to have a break and
Detoxing your skin allows you to remove all the impurities,
toxins and pollutions from the surface and reveal fresh and revitalised skin
cells. Dead skin cells leave your complexion looking dull, textured and just a
little bit sad. Exfoliating regularly removes these cells from the surface to
reveal brighter, more youthful skin.
Start with an at-home facial
Give yourself a pamper from the comfort of your own home!
Dig out that cleansing brush you’ve had for ages but rarely use and give your
skin a really good cleansing. Make sure you include a facial massage at the end
to get the blood circulating effectively!
Staying at home all day is the perfect excuse to pop a face mask on
and get on with any jobs on your to do list. Regularly using face masks allows
your skin to truly absorb the potent skincare ingredients and helps them
penetrate deep into the layers of the skin. We often think we don’t have enough
time to sit down and put a face mask on for 20 minutes so now is the perfect
opportunity! Make sure you choose one that tackles your skincare concerns
whether that be ageing, acne or pigmentation.
Take makeup breaks
I’m sure this is something a lot of us will be doing when
spending more time at home. No point wasting expensive makeup is there! Your
skin is definitely going to thank you for a few weeks’ makeup free. It allows
the skin to breathe, reset back to its natural rhythm and stay fresh. Makeup
often clogs up the pores when it isn’t properly removed so just giving yourself
a couple of weeks makeup free will really help the skin to detox.
Staying hydrated is always number one for keeping your skin
in the best condition possible. Drinking lots of water eliminates toxins from
the body and very few people drink as much water as they’re supposed to. With
spending more time at home, try to focus on giving yourself targets e.g. two
glass by 10am. Then you’re just setting your skin up to function as well as it
can do and glow!
So, your hair could benefit hugely from a little detoxing!
We put our hair through a lot on a regular basis with our normal routines of
washing, drying and styling which can leave hair dry and damage.
If you’ve always thought about trying to wash your hair less
but never got around to it with too many social occasions in the calendar, well
now’s the time to give it a go! Washing your hair less allows the oils and
minerals to stimulate the hair follicles properly and get into its own
self-cleaning routine. We’re not saying to stop washing your hair completely
but try cutting it down to twice a week to start with and see how you get on.
Have a break from heat styling
Heat is the number one thing that causes your hair damage.
Constantly blow drying, straightening, curling and styling hair put stress on
your locks and causes them to dry out, which then leads to weak and brittle
hair. Staying at home means you don’t need to constantly be washing and styling
your hair so just leave it to do its thing! It will thank you massively for it
after a few weeks…
Give it some love
Apply a hair mask once a week to give your hair a boost of nutrients and minerals. A deeply nourishing mask will help restore moisture and deeply penetrate the hair follicles. We love the Macadamia Ultra Rich Moisture Mask.
