FD Staff Tell All On Their Scentsational Memories

Scents are something to celebrate. Not only do they feed us positive energy that inspires us to feel confident and empowered when we walk into any room, but they also help us to capture important memories even if we don’t realise their significance at the time. Fragrances keep memories alive. Something may have happened, last month, last year, or even a decade ago and just one sensory overload of a particular scent will send those experiences rushing straight back to your head and heart in an instant. Today, the FD team are indulging in nostalgia as we look back on some of our favourite memories and the magical scents behind them!

Lucy, Product Marketing Executive
Anna Sui Dreams Eau De Toilette
My Scentsational Memory:
This fragrance was my best friend’s absolute favourite perfume when she was little – a relative had bought it for her as a gift one Christmas and she just fell in love with the scent. They discontinued the fragrance from high street shops a few years ago and she was so gutted until I found out that we stocked it! I bought it as a surprise for her birthday this year and her face was priceless. When she was that little blue handbag bottle, she was over the moon!

Liv, Graphic Designer
Chloe Love Story Eau Sensuelle
My Scentsational Memory:
This fragrance reminds me of coming out of a bad relationship but feeling great for it! I’d finally found a scent that suited me and always got me loads of compliments whenever I wore it. Whenever my friends smell it now, it reminds them of me too.

Emma, Junior Graphic Designer
Davidoff Cool Water Woman
My Scentsational Memory:
Ever since I was a child, I was transported into my mother’s hectic night out routine whenever there was the right occasion to do so. The night would start off with all of the classics of the past 50 years (yep, including ABBA), drinks flowing around the kitchen and every makeup and skincare product you could imagine sprawled out on every counter. Just before they left to go out, I would be overwhelmed with the scent of Cool Water Woman – her favourite fragrance. The scent lasted so long after they left the house you could still smell it hours later; evoking a lot of emotions over the years such as sadness as a child, happiness as a teenager and nostalgia as an adult.

Lauren, Ecommerce Marketing Manager
Armani Si Eau de Parfum Spray
My Scentsational Memory:
This fragrance takes me back to one of my favourite holidays – a week in Barcelona with my boyfriend. I wore this everyday I was there so now, every time I smell it, it takes me back to the sun, the sea and the sangria! I don’t tend to wear it very often so now whenever I do, it makes me smile and instantly reminds me of the amazing time I had in Barcelona and brings back all the best memories of that week away!

Beth, Product Marketing Executive
Boss Orange Eau de Toilette
My Scentsational Memory:
Boss Orange was bought for me as a gift when I was young – my first ever perfume! I remember feeling so grown up and so excited to have my own perfume that I wore it every day until it ran out. Years later, it was bought for me as a gift again as a going-away present when I moved away from home to go to university in Leeds. At that point, I smelt it and so many childhood memories came rushing back, I fell back in love with the scent and back into the routine of wearing it every day. Every time I smell it now, I am reminded of my freshers year – my friends at uni always say the scent reminds them of me too!

Mia, Social Media Intern
Diesel Loverdose Eau De Parfum
My Scentsational Memory:
This fragrance will always be a favourite of mine as the smell of it instantly reminds me of my favourite teenage years. I think my dad had bought it for me as a Christmas present one year and I instantly fell in love with how it smelt and looked. It felt like my very own signature scent as well as reminding me of my mum’s favourite, Thierry Mugler Alien, that she used to spray on my Me To You Tatty Teddy bear that I’d take with me to sleepovers all throughout my even younger years before this. Smelling Loverdose instantly reminds me of being blissfully happy in my first ever relationship and going on hilarious road trips with my friends when we finally passed our driving tests! Whenever I finish a bottle, I give them to my Nan who collects them so I’m instantly thrown back to different memories of mine whenever I visit her and see them displayed on her vanity too.

The Next Big Craze: Firming Everything

Throughout each and every single one of our lives, it’s inevitable that our skin goes through changes. Whether that’s going from combination skin in your twenties to dry skin in your forties or gaining stretch marks from having a baby or even having them in general (you’d be surprised just how many people do), a bit of firming action couldn’t hurt anyone, right? There are so many incredible skincare products out there but one the ultimate underdogs are the ones with firming superpowers. So, we’ve rounded up a bunch of goodies you can get your hands on today from our website for just as incredible prices.

Balance Gold Collagen Rejuvenate & Firm Face Mask is perfect for a quick boost. Formulated with colloidal gold and marine collagen, these masks will leave your face feeling glowy and radiant. They’re great for cooling, refreshing, brightening and de-tiring. Now doesn’t that just sound amazing?! And just when you thought they couldn’t get any better, they’re free from parabens, dyes, gluten and are completely cruelty-free.

Ren Clean Skincare Instant Firming Beauty Shot is a gel-serum that instantly firms, lifts and plumps the skin to leave it looking dramatically smoother, tighter and more youthful. This product is effectively a liquid matrix that supercharges the skin with firming moisture and encourages elastin synthesis to firm and remodel the skin over time. So, when you feel like you need that something extra to feel rejuvenated, this one could be your new best friend.

Revuele Slim & Detox Firming Gel stimulates cell renewal, making problem skin areas firmer, visually and physically whilst correcting body contours too. With its anti-cellulite effect, you can expect to feel your best with the help of this beauty. It also helps to restore smoothness, tone the skin and prevent the formation of stretch marks. Magic in a tube?

Guinot Longue Vie Cou Firming Vital Neck Care is a great product for an issue you’ve possibly never even thought about before. This firming cream that claims to be so much more is all about keeping your neck looking and feeling as youthful as ever. It’s unique ingredients help to knit the epidermis back together while reinforcing the skin’s elastic structures at the same time. You may be reading this thinking, why should I care about firming my neck. But, if you’re opting in to grow old gracefully, investing in products like these are well and truly worth it.
Once you’ve cleansed using a toner helps remove any dirt or makeup that has been leftover, which can then clog the pores and lead to breakouts. A toner will help nourish, soothe and hydrate the skin whilst also restoring it delicate pH balance. Try to look for a toner that doesn’t include alcohol as an ingredient, alcohol will dry out the skin and that’s definitely not what you need for maintaining that glow.

Cougar Bust Perfecting Firming & Plumping Cream contains active ingredients that really do the job. To breeze through the science-y part, this product contains 2% laracare and 5% volufiline which are both ingredients that are designed to give lipo-filling effects. This formulation is made to plump and firm your bust area while reducing fine lines and wrinkles all-around your décolletage area too. Again, this is another one you may never have even thought about researching but I bet you’re having a good think about it now, aren’t you?

Which of these products has caught your attention? Firming products are set to become more and more popular throughout the year and we’re recommending these products as the perfect starting place to try out different formulas to find something that works for you!

How To Maintain Your Glowy Summer Skin

How To Maintain Your Glowy Summer Skin

During the summer months we all strive for that gorgeous, firm, tanned, glowing skin to give you the perfect sun-kissed look. Glowy skin is supple, healthy, hydrated skin and it is much easier to achieve in the warmer months. In Winter, dry skin tends to build up, giving a dull appearance which is why its essential you focus this time on trying to maintain a healthy and hydrated complexion.

To keep up that gorgeous, glow read on for our top tips to keeping your skin in top condition.

1. Consider changing your face wash.

Cleansing your face is an essential part of your skincare routine and during the summer months your skin will produce more oil than usual so you need to make sure you’re using a cleanser that caters for your skin. If you’re particularly oily use a foaming cleanser that contains salicylic acid to keep pores unclogged.

FD Recommends: Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser

2. Don’t skip exfoliating

Don’t try and preserve your tan by skipping the exfoliator. Dead skin cells are already dead and will fall off eventually anyway, however if you exfoliate you are buffing these dead, dull cells away to reveal beautiful, glowing skin. Exfoliate twice a week with a chemical exfoliating product rather than something grainy. It will help stimulate collagen and elastin production for a firmer and younger appearance.

FD Recommends: Gatineau Radiance Enhancing Gommage

3. Use a toner

FD Recommends: Elemis Rehydrating Ginseng Toner

4. Add antioxidants into your routine

Invest in serums, moisturisers and sunscreens that come with additional benefits. Vitamin C for example protects your skin from environmental damage and boost collagen development. Products loaded with natural antioxidants help reduce inflammation and repair your skin.

FD Recommends: REN Clean Skincare Radiance Perfection Serum

5. Stay hydrated!

Drinking plenty of water is essential for achieving your best skin. It helps keep the skin hydrated as well as flushing out toxins from the body. Keep a refillable water bottle handy and keep sipping!

6. Moisturise with a Hyaluronic Acid

Don’t be tempted to skip the moisturiser just because you’re feeling a bit hot and sweaty in the heat. Use a topical moisturiser on a regular basis to keep the skin hydrated and working efficiently. Hyaluronic Acid acts a sponge to pull water into the skin and keep it looking plump and fresh.

FD Recommends: Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream

7. Wear Sunscreen

SPF is your skin’s best friend; we can’t say it enough. Excessive UV exposure can permanently damage your skin, and this leads to pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and premature ageing. Definitely not what you want! Apply SPF regularly to help keep your skin protected from sun exposure.

FD Recommends: Nuage Superior Sunscreen Protection SPF 50

The Ultimate Guide to Facial Cleansing

The Ultimate Guide to Facial Cleansing

Skincare can be a little overwhelming. From serums to toners, and how often to wash your face to what to wash it with, there’s a lot to factor in.

A good routine is important for maintaining your skin, so we’re here to point out the biggest skincare mistakes and show you what our favourite products are and how to use them.

Worst skincare mistakes

1. Not understanding your skin

When it comes to a skincare, you need to make sure your routine is tailored to suit you. A big mistake that people make when deciding what products to use is ignoring what type of skin they have.

It sounds simple but understanding the skin you’re in is the biggest difference between a successful routine and one that does more harm than good.

The most common skin types are:

• Oily – shiny or greasy T-zone and visible pores
• Dry – maybe some fine lines and wrinkles and prone to tightness and barely visible pores
Combination – consists of two skin types, oily and dry, in different areas of the face
• Acne Prone – skin will be extremely oily and prone to blackheads and whiteheads
• Aging – wrinkles are present, possibly with some pigmentation

2. Not using the correct products

Many people ask whether they can wash their face with only a bar of soap and water. Unfortunately, no matter how expensive the bar of soap is, it will not help your skincare one bit. Soap strips your skin of moisture, instantly creating dead skin cell build up.

To effectively wash your face, a good cleanser is a solid investment.

Using the right products in the right order is vital. If you don’t layer correctly, you risk your products not being fully absorbed and might miss out on the full benefits.

Start with lightweight formulas and move on to heavier creams to ensure your skin gets the best treatment without blocking your pores or causing piling (those tiny balls of product which build up when you’ve applied too much product).

The best order for skincare application is:

• Cleanser
• Toner
• Spot Cream
• Serum
• Eye cream
• Moisturiser

This might vary depending on which products you decide to use in your routine.

Top skincare tips

For oily and acne-prone skin

Cleansers are a major key to unlocking an effective skincare routine. Depending on your type of skin, you should consider different types of cleansers. Both oily and acne-prone skin types should try a foaming liquid, such as Guinot’s Microbiotic Purifying Regulating Foam. This airy foam will help break down dirt and clear pores.

For dry skin

Those with dry skin should try creams or lotions. Products such as the Garnier Start Afresh Cleansing Lotion are great at clearing the skin while hydrating it at the same time.

For ageing skin

A melting balm is perfect for aging skin. The rich, buttery substance of balms such as the Elemis Pro-Collagen Rose Cleansing Balm means they melt into a liquid when rubbed onto the skin. These are super soothing and can be used without water to dissolve heavy makeup.

For all skin types

Any skin type can use a micellar water (like NUXE’s Rose Petal Micellar Water), the staple of any French skin routine. This soap-free option avoids dryness whilst clearing up oil and dirt. It doesn’t need to be washed off after use, simply wiping will suffice.

A good exfoliator is important for giving your skin that all-important glow. Exfoliator works by removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.

As ever, it is important to pair your exfoliant with your skin. For example, oily skin works well with a charcoal exfoliant such as the Purity Plus Charcoal Face Scrub, whereas dry skin should use a mask, like Uriage Hyséac Exfoliating Mask, rather than a scrub as it is gentler and less likely to irritate.

Moisturiser is perfect for rejuvenating tired skin and can help keep wrinkles at bay. Those with dry skin should look for a thick, oil-based moisturiser, like the Alumine Nourishing Buriti Oil Moisturiser, as this will help replenish natural oils. For combination skin, gentle and balanced moisturisers are key, making Guinot’s Hydrazone Toutes Peaux Moisturising Cream a great choice.
