Makeup Brushes And Their Uses

Makeup Brushes And Their Uses

Have you fallen into the trap of buying more makeup brushes than you know what to do with? Or perhaps you’re in the other camp, and have a couple of tired, worn out brushes that you use for a multitude of uses? Decking out your makeup bag with the right brushes will do more than make it look pretty. They’ll help you to apply makeup in the best way, giving you a polished final look. There are a few clever multipurpose products out there, like Brush Works’ Purple & Black Multi Tasking Brush, which can be used for face, blush and bronzer. But for a fool proof approach, you’ll need the lowdown on what kinds of brushes do what jobs. Here are just a few of the essentials to include in your kit.

Foundation Brushes

For even coverage, a foundation brush is a must. Different brushes work well with alternative types of foundation and concealer, with softer, natural brushes working well with powder-based products, and firmer, synthetic brushes giving you the best effect for liquid foundations. Examples include Body Collection Foundation Brush, and the W7 Foundation Brush.

Blush brushes

Some varieties of blusher brushes are championed by different makeup artists, and there are a huge range on the market, so whittling the choice down can feel tricky. Ultimately, think about how you want your makeup to look, and what you’re comfortable using. For instance, some blush brushes are designed especially for contouring. This might be perfect for you, or you may prefer something that gives a more natural look. ROYAL & LANGNICKEL’s Moda Blush Make Up Brush is ideal in that scenario, whereas Royal Cosmetics’ Pro Angled Blusher Brush will give you more precise control.

Bronzer brushes

Fluffy, loose brushes are perfect for applying a sweep of bronze to your complexion. Look out for powder brushes that have oversized heads, so you can get a smooth arc of bronzer across the cheeks and forehead. Products like the So Eco Bronzer Brush and the Naj Oleari Powder Brush will give you the exact effect you need.

Eyeshadow brushes

Equipping yourself with more than one eyeshadow brush will give you all the tools you need when trying out different looks. If you need to keep to a budget, make sure to treat yourself to at least two eyeshadow brushes, one for looser powders, and a second for working with eyeliners and gel or liquid based products. The clever Brush Works Purple & Black Double Ended Eye Brush gives you two brushes in one. Or, get a narrow-tipped brush like Body Collection’s Large Eyeshadow Brush for precision, and W7 Eyeshadow Brush (04) for sweeping on colour.

Blending brushes

Blending is the key to creating that flawless, finished look! Whether that’s blending eyeshadow, or highlighter, you’ll need a good blending brush in your back pocket. Check out products like the Royal Cosmetics Blending Brush and Technic’s Pro Blending Brush for a silky, professional look.

Hair Removal Tips

Hair Removal Tips

To remove hair or not to remove hair! For women in particular, hair removal can be a contentious issue. Culturally, the expectation is on to keep our skin looking smooth and hair free across most parts of the body. Whether you choose to regularly remove hair, and how much of it you take off, is completely your choice. But if you do want smoother legs, bikini line, or underarms, there are a few options. Some methods will feel more comfortable and will work better for you. So, here’s the lowdown on the top ways to remove hair at home.

Shaving

The biggest benefit of shaving is that it’s cheap and quick. The downside is the potential for unsightly, painful nicks and razor burn. Ouch. Being up-to-speed on the best way to shave will help minimise these factors. When it comes to your legs, use smooth strokes, and pull your skin taught around your less-firm bikini area. For your underarms, be sure to shave in multiple directions to capture all hair growth.

You’ll also need to prep your skin before shaving and take care of it post-shave. Your legs will need a bigger boost of moisture than your bikini or underarms after shaving. When it comes to products, use shave creams and gels to moisturise the area, allowing your razor to glide over the skin. Using a good razor is key too. Electric razors like the Braun Silk And Soft Rechargeable Body Shaver or the Remington Ultimate Bikini Kit trim and shave without nicks and cuts.

Waxing

Waxing is a flexible solution that can be used on any area, from your legs and bikini to your face. Plus, unlike shaving, it will give you longer-lasting effects, meaning you can get your hair removal done in one hit and forget about it for a few weeks. There is a pain-level factor to waxing which can put some off, but with the right technique and care, you can minimise the distress to your skin.

Always exfoliate before you wax, and make sure the hairs are long enough to pull out. Choose products that are designed for more delicate areas, like your face too, such as Smooth Appeal’s Facial Hair Remover Wax. For other body areas, buy a wax, like Surgi Wax’s For Bikini Body and Legs. Post-wax lotions like Strictly Professional’s After Wax Oil are an essential too, to soothe and condition.

Epilating

Epilators have become increasingly popular in recent years, but there’s no denying that they can be more than a little painful to begin with. Advocates will tell you that this does get better the more you use them however, and they do give you long-lasting hair removal. The trick is to exfoliate first, just like waxing. Often, it’s good to do this a day before, rather than on the day. And try a wet exfoliator in a warm shower to reduce pain.

Some versatile products include Braun’s Silk-Ǹpil 9 Wet & Dry Epilator, and Remington’s 4 In 1 Epilator. Post epilation, always apply a good moisturiser. Ones with aloe or witch hazel work best to soothe skin.

Hair removal creams

The great thing about hair removal creams is that they’re just as quick as shaving and they’re pain-free. Although they’re not as long lasting as waxing or epilating, they can give you two or three days of smooth skin without the chance of shaving nicks and cuts.

The best approach is to test a small area of skin first, to ensure the product won’t react badly with your skin. Always go in the shower too, to avoid mess. Products include Veet’s Hair Removal Cream for Sensitive Skin, and Silkia’s Hair Removal Cream. Afterwards, your skin should be silky-smooth, and a good slathering of moisturiser will help you look and feel great.

Skincare Tips for Men

Skincare Tips for Men

It only takes a few tweaks to refine your skincare routine, even if you’re a man on-the-go. By looking after your skin, you’ll look better and feel healthier. The good news is that you don’t need a cabinet full of cosmetics to get that youthful glow either. The trick is picking the right products for you and sticking to a routine that works with your skin and your lifestyle.

Cleanse

Washing your face daily, especially after exercise, will cleanse your skin of pollutants, dirt and sweat. Rather than opting for harsh soaps and hot showers, make sure to go for a cleanser that’s gentle enough for daily use. Your skin type will dictate what sort of cleanser will suit you too. Jack Black’s Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser is a perfect addition to your shower caddy, or if you want something for a deeper clean, check out products like Elemis’s Men Deep Cleanse Facial Wash.

Have a shaving routine

With the right shaving accessories, you’ll be able to keep your grooming technique in order, and your skin fresh and razor-burn free. Avoid cheap disposable razors at all costs and swot up on shaving techniques before you put a blade to your skin. All this will help you avoid unsightly lumps and bumps post-shave. Depending on your style, there are clever electricals like the BaByliss For Men i-Stubble 3, and the Braun Series 3 Style n Shave 3 In 1 Shaver. Pre-shave products like foams and shave soaps will help razors glide over your skin, and post-shave balms and lotions, like American Crew’s Post Shave Cooling Lotion, will soothe and protect.

Moisturise

Whether you’re a man who shaves every day or not, moisturising is an essential if you want to look younger and keep your skin healthy. Think of ‘cleanse and moisturise’ as part of your immovable daily routine, and you can’t go wrong. Again, look for a moisturiser that works with your skin type. If you’re unsure what that is, check out typical traits for different skin types and familiarise yourself with what you need. Great moisturising products include the NUXE Men Moisturising Multi Purpose Gel, and Jack Black’s Clean Break Oil Free Moisturiser.

Use SPF creams

Sun damage is one of those things that can really add years to your face. More importantly, protecting your delicate skin from harmful UV rays is just common sense. Even during the gloomier months, it’s good practice to add a little SPF to your skin. Look for higher factors for better protection, like Ultrasun’s Face Anti Ageing Sun Protection Sensitive with SPF30.

Get the odd pamper product

Who’s to say men can’t have a bit of pampering at times too? There are plenty of great products designed for men’s skin that enable you to indulge every once in a while. BARBER PRO’s Under Eye Mask With Activated Charcoal reduces puffiness and calms irritated skin, and little treats like NUXE’s Merveillance Expert Lifting Eye Cream are a simple, luxurious addition to your daily routine.
